A Historic Journey on Two Wheels: Exploring Britain's Camping Heritage
Embarking on a 60-mile cycling adventure, I set out to retrace the footsteps of Britain's camping pioneers, starting from Oxford, the birthplace of the Camping and Caravanning Club (CCC). This journey, a celebration of the CCC's 125th anniversary, offered a unique perspective on the evolution of camping and cycling in the UK.
Uncovering Hidden Paths
The route, following National Cycle Route 57, revealed a hidden side of Oxford, a city I thought I knew intimately. The e-bike, a modern twist on the traditional bicycle, became my trusted companion as I discovered what felt like secret passageways through the countryside. This mode of transport, I believe, captures the essence of exploration, allowing one to immerse themselves in the surroundings while covering impressive distances.
A Club's Humble Beginnings
The CCC's origins are fascinating. Founded by Thomas Hiram Holding, a visionary who recognized the health benefits of camping, the club started as the Association of Cycle Campers. Holding, an innovator himself, designed lightweight camping gear, making outdoor adventures more accessible. His understanding of the connection between nature and well-being resonates even today, as modern campers seek to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
A Journey Through Time
Pedaling through the picturesque landscapes, I couldn't help but contrast the modern camping experience with Holding's era. Back then, the challenge of attaching gear to a tandem bike was a significant hurdle, whereas today, we have e-bikes with ample storage for tents and supplies. The journey from Oxford to Walton-on-Thames became a reflection on how camping has evolved, from homemade tents and bamboo poles to the ubiquitous motorhomes and caravans we see today.

Despite the rise of glamping and motorhomes, the CCC assures that traditional tent camping is still at the heart of their sites. This is evident at Bella Vista Camping, where a vast field welcomes tent campers, offering a sense of community amidst the Soay sheep and alpacas. It's a reminder that while technology has enhanced the camping experience, the core values of outdoor adventure remain unchanged.
